You can train an ant into a mount at the mount training NPC. Training can fail, and the ant is gone either way - here is when it is worth it.
How mount training works
Hand an ant to the mount training NPC to try to turn it into a mount. Training can succeed or fail, and either way that ant is no longer available for your colony - so never train a worker you rely on. Odds are not published anywhere we could find.
Is a mount worth it?
A mount is only slightly faster than walking, and you can already teleport back to your colony from the top of the screen. Early on the ant is usually worth more producing food; train mounts once your colony runs itself.
